Silversea Silver Dawn
In spring 2025, Charles and I completed a thrilling 13-day adventure through the far reaches of the Nordic region, and trust me, this was no ordinary cruise. From the moment we stepped aboard in Sweden to our final docking in Iceland, this journey redefined how we approach travel.
Setting Sail: Stockholm and the Choice of Luxury
Our journey began at the modern Frihamnen terminal in Stockholm. This itinerary was specifically chosen for its ambitious reach, touching remote corners that are notoriously challenging to visit independently: Oslo and Bergen (Norway), Torshavn (Faroe Islands), and Akureyri, Isafjordur, and Reykjavik (Iceland). With five days scheduled at sea between ports, it was the perfect balance of exploration and relaxation.
The Silversea Difference: All-Inclusive Luxury
As this was our very first cruise, the selection of the ship was paramount. We chose Silversea specifically for its reputation as a leader in ultra-luxury, all-inclusive cruising and, crucially, for its intimate ship size.
We sailed aboard the Silver Dawn, a beautiful vessel that launched in 2022. Designed for just over 500 passengers, it offers the space, amenity, and dining options of a mega-ship while maintaining the exclusive service of a small yacht. Known for its all-suite accommodations, personalized butler service, and exceptional culinary program, Silversea promised a refined way to traverse the globe.
A Suite Upgrade: Our Private Residence at Sea
Before sailing, I surprised Charles with an upgrade to a magnificent Silver Suite. This isn’t just a cabin – it’s a true apartment at sea. The Silver Suite features separate sleeping and dining areas, a marble bathroom with large whirlpool and separate shower, and ample walk-in closet space. Having our own private dining table, a full living room setup, and the highly attentive butler service made the suite feel like a cozy, yet elegant, home base for the voyage.
Navigating the Skärgården: An Unforgettable Departure
The moment we slipped our lines and departed Stockholm was, in itself, a travel highlight. We spent the first few hours on deck, watching the ship glide through the Skärgården, or the Stockholm Archipelago.
This vast network consists of tens of thousands of islands, islets, and skerries, peppered with picturesque red summer cottages and quaint lighthouses. It was a stunning, slow-motion journey where the scenery was so close you felt you could reach out and touch the land. We knew our cruise was destined to be special when the views were already this dramatic just hours after boarding!
Days at Sea: Relaxation and Socializing on the Baltic
Our itinerary required two full days at sea to transition from the Swedish archipelago, through the Baltic Sea, and across the Öresund strait before reaching Norway. The weather in May was bright and crisp – the lingering luminescence of the Northern spring was already a constant presence.
The two full days at sea proved to be the perfect opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the ship’s luxurious offerings and indulge in some much-needed pampering. We spent hours relaxing on the pool deck chaise lounges, catching up on reading in the invigorating, bright air, and even discovered a secret, secluded hot tub on the aft deck – perfect for peaceful soaks while watching the endless churning wake. For true tranquility, a visit to the ship’s spa, part of the exquisite Otium wellness program, was magical. Focused on deep relaxation and pleasure, our massage was transcendent, complete with a warmed, weighted eye pillow and the soothing rhythm of the ocean below.
Beyond relaxation, these days were filled with opportunities for socializing and fine dining. We befriended an intriguing group of doctors from Phoenix who invited us to join their afternoon trivia team – a great way to meet fellow travelers and exercise the mind! We spent one evening at La Dame, the ship’s exclusive, black-tie French restaurant, where we savored classic haute cuisine. Here, we met a charming older couple from Australia. Discovering that they were huge theater fans, Charles enthusiastically entertained them with stories and insights about the inner workings of Broadway, capping off a perfect day at sea.
Arrival in Oslo: Ready for the Fjords
After two restful and engaging days at sea, it was a delight to wake up on the third morning and see land. We were smoothly docked right in the heart of the Oslo harbor, ready to begin our explorations of Norway’s capital.
